Alright, it’s that time. You’ve got the fuzzy socks on, your Target candles are doing their best “pine forest” impression, and you need something to watch that won’t stress you out. Enter: holiday christmas romance movies.
I run darkdesirebooks, which… yeah, I know. I’m usually over here yelling about morally grey men and knife play. But December hits and even I need a break from the emotional damage. Sometimes you just want snow, a small town, and two people falling in love because one of them owns a bakery and the other one’s a workaholic from Chicago.
So here’s my list. Not the entire Hallmark catalog — we’d be here till 2027. Just the ones I actually rewatch. The ones that feel like a hug. And yeah, a few that are kinda dumb, but in the best way.
Why We’re All Obsessed With Christmas Romance Movies
Let’s not pretend. Nobody’s watching christmas romance films for the plot twists. We know she’s gonna quit her big-city job. We know he’s secretly a prince. That’s the point.
It’s comfort food. You know how the story ends, so your brain can chill. After a year of… well, gestures at everything, sometimes you need something predictable. You need the guy who falls through the ice during the town festival and she has to warm him up with cocoa and banter.
Also, the stakes are hilariously low. The big conflict is usually “the Christmas pageant might get cancelled” or “the inn is going to be sold to a developer.” Compare that to my usual dark romance book recs where someone’s getting kidnapped by chapter 2. Big difference.
The Hallmark + Lifetime Classics You Can’t Skip
If you’re new to holiday christmas romance movies, this is your starter pack. These are the ones your mom probably watches.
1. The Holiday (2006)
Not technically Hallmark, but it’s the blueprint. Jude Law, Cameron Diaz, Kate Winslet, Jack Black. Two women swap houses for Christmas. One ends up in a cozy English cottage, the other in LA. It’s sweet, it’s got Jude Law crying in the snow, and Hans Zimmer did the score. Elite.
2. A Christmas Prince (Netflix)
Listen. Is it good? No. Do I watch it every year? Yes. An American journalist goes undercover to report on a playboy prince and… you can guess the rest. It’s the cinematic equivalent of gas station hot chocolate. You know it’s bad for you but it’s December, so who cares.
3. The Holiday Calendar (Netflix)
Kat Graham gets an antique advent calendar that predicts the future. It’s magical realism, it’s got cheese, and it made me believe in magic for like 2 hours. That’s a win.
4. Christmas Inheritance (Netflix)
Big-city heiress has to deliver a letter to her dad’s hometown to get her inheritance. Small town, snowstorm, handsome inn manager. You’ve seen this christmas romance movie 12 times with different actors. Still works.
The Ones That Are Actually Kinda Good
Shocking, I know. Some christmas romance films have real writing. Real chemistry. You could show these to a film snob and not die of embarrassment.
5. Love Actually (2003)
Divisive take: it holds up. Yes, some storylines are weird. But Hugh Grant dancing, Emma Thompson’s breakdown, Colin Firth proposing in broken Portuguese? It’s iconic. And the airport ending gets me every time. It’s technically multiple romances, but it counts.
6. While You Were Sleeping (1995)
Not Christmas-the-entire-time, but it’s set over the holidays and it’s peak Sandra Bullock. She’s lonely, she saves a guy’s life, his family thinks she’s his fiancée. Bill Pullman is right there. It’s warm, it’s funny, and the family scenes feel real. Rewatch this with a blanket.
7. The Family Stone (2005)
Okay, this one’s messy. It’s a family dramedy with romance, not pure fluff. Sarah Jessica Parker brings her boyfriend home for Christmas and his family hates her. It’s awkward, it’s sad, it’s also kinda beautiful. Watch this when you want to feel feelings, not just sugar.
Newer Holiday Christmas Romance Movies Worth Your Time
Netflix and co. have been busy. Some of it’s filler. Some of it’s great. Here’s what stuck.
8. Falling for Christmas (2022)
Lindsay Lohan. Amnesia. A lodge. That’s it, that’s the pitch. It knows exactly what it is and it leans in. Lohan’s charm carries it. Perfect if your brain is mush after gift shopping.
9. Holidate (2020)
Not strictly Christmas, but it covers all holidays. Emma Roberts and Luke Bracey agree to be each other’s platonic plus-ones to avoid family nagging. It’s raunchier than most holiday christmas romance movies — they make sex jokes! — and the chemistry is actually there.
10. Single All the Way (2021)
Gay Christmas rom-com. Netflix finally did it. Peter convinces his best friend to pretend to be his boyfriend for the holidays. It’s sweet, it’s funny, and the family isn’t traumatic for once. Kathy Najimy and Jennifer Coolidge steal every scene.
11. Your Christmas or Mine? (2022)
British, on Prime. Young couple each decides to surprise the other for Christmas, ends up at each other’s family homes instead. It’s chaos, class differences, and actually funny writing. Asa Butterfield is charming as hell.
So Bad They’re Good: My Guilty Pleasure Picks
These christmas romance movies have no business being this entertaining. The acting’s stiff, the plots make zero sense, and I will defend them with my life.
12. Christmas with a View (2018)
Netflix. Chef quits fancy restaurant, goes home, works at a ski lodge. Hot new manager shows up. He’s also a celebrity. There’s a snowstorm. There’s a cooking competition. Every trope known to man is here and I ate it up.
13. A California Christmas (2020) & A California Christmas: City Lights (2021)
He’s a rich guy pretending to be a ranch hand to trick her into selling her land. She’s… too trusting, honestly. It’s so melodramatic. The sequel is even wilder. Watch when you need to yell “nooo don’t trust him” at your TV.
How To Watch Holiday Christmas Romance Movies Like a Pro
- Lower your expectations, raise your blanket. These aren’t Oscar bait. They’re for serotonin.
- Make it an event. Cocoa, cookies, fuzzy socks. If you’re in the US and it’s 30 degrees out, you’re legally required to have at least one candle going.
- Bingo cards. “Big city job,” “dead parent,” “town festival,” “misunderstanding at 80% mark.” Take a sip of cocoa every time. You’ll be hydrated.
- Double feature rule: Pair one cheesy one with one good one. A Christmas Prince + The Holiday = balance.
Where To Find These Christmas Romance Films in the US
Most of these holiday christmas romance movies live on:
- Netflix — bulk of the new ones, plus Love Actually most years
- Hallmark Movies Now — if you want 500 versions of “CEO goes to small town”
- Hulu — has Happiest Season and While You Were Sleeping usually
- Prime Video — Your Christmas or Mine?, plus rentals
- Peacock — NBC stuff, plus some Lifetime movies
Check your local library too. I’m serious. Mine has DVDs of every Hallmark movie since 2010. Free is free.
Quick note from darkdesirebooks
I know this isn’t my usual blood-and-knife content. But even I need a palate cleanser. If you’re here from my dark romance book posts and you’re like “what is this wholesome energy,” hi. Welcome. We contain multitudes. Go watch The Family Stone and then come back and read Haunting Adeline for emotional whiplash. Balance.
So, Which Holiday Christmas Romance Movies Are You Watching First?
That’s the only list you need this year, I promise. You don’t need to watch 87 of them. Pick 3 or 4. Watch them when the sun sets at 4:30pm and you’re kinda sad about it. Let the fake snow and predictable kisses reset your brain.
Got one I missed? A christmas romance movie you watch every year that I didn’t mention? I’m over on darkdesirebooks collecting recs. Come tell me I’m wrong. I love being wrong about this stuff.
FAQs About Holiday Christmas Romance Movies
1. Why do people love holiday christmas romance movies so much?
Honestly? Because December is exhausting and your brain needs a break. These movies are predictable in the best way. Small town, big snowstorm, guy who hates Christmas but has a secret bakery. You know exactly what’s gonna happen and that’s the point. It’s like emotional chicken soup. No stakes, just vibes.
2. Are all holiday christmas romance movies Hallmark movies?
Nope, though Hallmark definitely runs the game. You’ve also got Netflix, Lifetime, Great American Family, and even some chaotic ones on Hulu. Hallmark’s the cozy queen, Netflix is where it gets a little spicier or weirder, and Lifetime will occasionally throw in a murder plot just to keep you awake. Same energy, different flavor.
3. What’s a good holiday christmas romance movie if I hate cheesy stuff?
Okay, “hate cheesy” is tough because cheese is kinda the genre. But try The Holiday — it’s got Jude Law and Cameron Diaz, so it feels fancier. Or Love Actually if you can handle the multiple storylines. Happiest Season if you want gay panic + Kristen Stewart. They’re still romance movies, but with a bit more bite and less “you’re the mayor’s daughter??” energy.
4. Do I have to watch these with family or can I be a gremlin alone?
Please be a gremlin. That’s the superior way. Blanket, snacks, your phone on Do Not Disturb, and no one judging you for crying when they finally kiss under the mistletoe. Watching with family is fun too, but solo is when you can fully commit to the bit. Bonus: you can rewind the cringe parts and cackle.
5. Which holiday christmas romance movies are actually worth watching this year?
If you’re in the US and scrolling for what’s new: Netflix usually drops 3-4 every November and at least one is accidentally good. Falling for Christmas with Lindsay Lohan was chaotic in a fun way. Hot Frosty is exactly what it sounds like and I refuse to explain further. For classics, you can’t go wrong with While You Were Sleeping — not technically Christmas, but it feels Christmas. And yeah, The Princess Switch series. I said what I said.
